As great as the finish was today at Martinsville, I am still fuming over the fact that NASCAR created that last GWC restart. My driver, Jeff Gordon, was the beneficiary of Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch pitting under ten laps to go. He was leading on the restart with four to go, and was pulling away for the win with bumpin', bangin', and three-wide racing (!) behind him. Then, Kyle Busch wrecked in turns 3 and 4 as Gordon was coming to take the white flag. At that point, I thought he took the white flag and had the win, but NASCAR somehow determined that Jeff hadn't taken the white when the caution flew, thus setting up to restart with two to go.
Even at that point, I thought Jeff was still able to win the race. Newman and Kenseth were running second and third, and I didn't expect them to challenge Jeff, who had the stronger car. Hamlin was fourth, but with the outside lane, I didn't think he could get to Jeff. Alas, shit happened and Hamlin pulled off the improbable (or probable?) victory. It was a great finish, but not the outcome I was hoping for.
On a good note, Jimmie Johnson didn't win (9th) :D
