I was doing this in the spirit of the NCAA tourney coming up (I am not a college basketball fan, though I did fill out a bracket) but after I was done, I realized this is much more exciting than how the Chase is now. I always thought elimination style would be cool; however too many people criticize this saying it?s not fair to have one race dictate your season. So what about two races? Here are the criteria for my Chase tournament and how it would have worked last year.

How it works:

The top 16 drivers (don?t tell me that?s too many) qualify after 28 races.

Seeding is based on points as they are after Dover?we won?t reset them according to wins.

All rounds consist of two races ? whichever driver scores the most points after the two races advances.

Here is how the traditional points (seeds) were after Dover:

1. Tony Stewart
2. Jeff Gordon
3. Jimmie Johnson
4. Denny Hamlin
5. Mark Martin
6. Kurt Busch
7. Juan Montoya
8. Ryan Newman
9. Carl Edwards
10. Gregory Biffle
11. Kasey Kahne
12. Brian Vickers
13. Matt Kenseth
14. Kyle Busch
15. Clint Bowyer
16. David Reuitimann

First Round:

Stewart over Reuitimann
Edwards over Newman

Hamlin over Kenseth
Martin over Vickers

Gordon over Bowyer
Montoya over Biffle

Johnson over Ky Busch
Ku Busch over Kahne

Round 2

Stewart over Edwards
Martin over Hamlin

Gordon over Montoya
Johnson over Ku. Busch

Final Four

Martin over Stewart
Gordon over Johnson

This leaves the championship battle between Mark Martin and Jeff Gordon going into Phoenix and Homestead. With Martins struggles in the final race, Gordon wins it 288 to 287. I am not saying that would happen every year, but that sure got me excited just imagining it. If we do the Chase, why not try this?
